Fort Henry was built from 1832 to 1837 to replace an existing fortification from the War of 1812 era. Fort Henry was then restored from 1936 to 1938, when it was opened as a museum and historic site in August 1938. Fort Henry is Ontario's first and only UNESCO designated World Heritage sites, along with the the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications Network. Fort Henry continues its role as a museum and historic site to residents of Kingston and visitors from all around the world. Once inside the wooden gates, visitors enter the realm of 19th century military life, experience guided tours, scenic views, heart-pounding musical performances and precision military demonstrations by the Fort Henry Guard. The Fort also plays host to numerous special ceremonies and events that take place all season long. Open from May 18 - September 1, for Daily Programming, Special Events and Sunset Ceremonies.

Fort Henry hosts a restaurant that operate seasonally and on special occasions for casual diners. Mothers’ Day, Thanksgiving Weekend and Christmas from late November to New Years’ Eve. During July & August the fort hosts numerous special events including the famous Fort Henry Sunset Ceremony. Most nights guests may dine in the officers’ mess being served a three-course fixed price menu served by soldier servants.
